Rena was born in Las Vegas, Nevada and attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and Utah State University prior to completing her veterinary studies at Murdoch University in 2005. Following graduation, Rena completed a Preceptorship in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care at Murdoch Pet Emergency Centre, prior to working in country mixed animal practice. Rena has a keen interest in small animal medicine and surgery, and in particular exotic animals, and completed Membership examinations in Medicine and Surgery of Unusual Pets through the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in 2011 and Avian Health (Caged and Aviary Birds) in 2018, and has participated as both Assistant and Head Subject Examiner for the College since attaining qualification. Rena has worked at Larkhill Veterinary Hospital since 2011 as a small animal clinician, focused mainly on Unusual and Exotic animals, as well as having an interest in small farm health and general surgery. Outside if the Veterinary profession, Rena is an avid participant in horse sports and is attaining further Coaching qualifications through Equestrian Australia.

Dr Rachel Tan graduated from the University of Sydney before spending several years working in mixed practice on the South Coast of NSW. She completed an internship and residency in Equine Medicine and Surgery at the University of Sydney before relocating to the United States. During her time at Virginia Tech in the USA, she gained Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and Master of Science Degree. She is also certified in Veterinary Medical Acupuncture from Colorado State University.

After returning from the USA in 2008, Dr Tan became a founding faculty member of the newly created undergraduate Bachelor of Veterinary Science Degree at the School of Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences, James Cook University (JCU), Townsville. Here she was the coordinator of the Equine Clinical Studies Program.

Dr Tan is a registered specialist in large animal internal medicine and her clinical interests include equine respiratory, endocrine, metabolic and infectious diseases. In addition to joining the ANZCVS team as the Project Officer, she works in private equine practice in Brisbane.
